South Dakota Cannabis Legal Status: Medical Sales are Legal
Currently only medical marijuana is legal in the state of South Dakota. Though, in a first for the nation, South Dakota voters supported legalizing both medicinal and adult-use cannabis during the November 2020 elections, in November 2021 the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled against adult-use cannabis in the state. On July 1, 2021, medical dispensaries began selling cannabis. First-year medical marijuana sales are expected to total $1.5 – $2.0 million, with the market reaching $10 million – $12 million by 2024.
